Radish also called Raphanus sativus. Radish can be sown in a shady area of the garden, especially for summer sewing, at fortnightly intervals all the way from February until the end of August. Because they take up little space, they can be sown in between rows of other vegetables. Ensure the seeds are only very lightly covered with soil when sown.. As soon as the seedlings appear it is worth thinning out the row to a three or 4 inch spacing. The drier the ground, the more stringy the Radish and therefore it is worth making sure that they are well watered, as they develop. Next February watch out for frosts on young seedlings, if you want an early crop, years ago they used to use straw to insulate. The February and March plantings require a much more sheltered and sunnier position than that of the summer plantings. It is worth netting the area as birds are attracted to the seeds. Gather the crop gradually, as and when required. Because the best radishes grow on well-drained soils, then you will find that watering is needed more often. Their heavy soils such as clay needs to be thoroughly dug over previous to planting and incorporating plenty of horticultural grit to open the ground up and create good drainage. There are many different shapes available from long and thin, through to almost round. Radishes are always tastier if harvested on the small side while they are at their most crisp and tender. In Victorian times they used to store the crop that was harvested in November in either fire ash or sand and then took them, as and when required, throughout the winter. Here are some varieties to consider. Scarlet Globe is a variety that can be sown in February to August and it is round and red with quite a strong flavour. April Cross is a variety that you can plant in spring and summer and this is one you don't have to crop all at once. Mino early is a milder variety that can be sown from now through to September. Black Spanish Round is wonderful planting towards the end of the month and is for use during the autumn and winter. Cherry Belle is round and red and one of the best for the February March introduction. French Breakfast is a milder one and can be harvested while they are young and crispy. There are many other varieties available and we need to do is make a trip to your horticultural outlet and gather a variety of your choosing and have a go. Good luck !! |
