It would certainly be wise to cover all options before ordering a new load of turf and repeating what you already had, only for it to happen again in a few years time, if we have similar weather to contend with in the future. Where a lawn that is well established has died, it is important to put in plenty of new nutrient, and the only way to do this is to dig out and replace the top 6 inches, which begins to be expensive and who's to say it won't happen again further down the line. You can raise the area and rot-ovate lots more goodness into the top, but this method will definitely settle erratically and may cause undulations later. The weather has been so dry this year that many people have had this experience on very established lawns. It may be that your lawn has been too much to look after in the past few years and therefore, maybe putting in wider borders and thoroughly preparing a smaller area for new turf or grass seed would make it more friendly to look after, in the future. It could be merely a shape change that will transform your outlook. It maybe worth getting in an expert to help you create your transition from old lawn to new shape, design and installation. Certainly, where your old lawn has always struggled, such as under trees, then it seems silly to pursue this route of replacing the lawn and instead making a feature out of it using the correct plants, installing a lovely hammock and really showing off this previously difficult area. There are huge numbers of shade-loving plants, and simply installing a few rocks or railway sleepers to retain a new volume of soil would increase the range of plants that could be grown under the established trees. This would really enhance the area. Because gardening is limitless, with the options, it may well be worth doing something different, go for it, I'm sure you won't regret making a change. It would be great if you would upload some digital photographs of before and after your struggling lawn. This will transform it into new shapes and features. Good luck from The Plant Doctor. |
