Day lilies or Hemerocallis
Definitely one of the more exotic looking flowers in the herbaceous border. Strapped, green arching foliage, mixing fabulously with grasses and grass like plants. Fantastic flowers in an array of colours, almost through the rainbow in terms of options to choose from. Heights differ from variety to variety. The variety Hemerocallis dumortieri will only be a foot and a half in height when in flower, a deep yellow blooms during the summer. Hemerocallis Pink Dasmask is towards the other extreme, at approximately 3.5 Ft, when in flower. The flowers can be double, single, two toned, more rounded or more pointed in the flowers, depending on what you're looking for. It is well worth having a good look at what is available as the summer is the best time to see these wonderfully hardy exotic plants in flower, which allows you to do your homework and find out about the varieties you like. It is best to plant them after flowering, but there is nothing stopping you purchasing one you like, and plunge planting it in its pot, in the ground and leaving it there, watering it in situ and when its finished flowering, you can take it out of its pot and plant it. The advantage of plunge planting, is that the wind and sun, will take much longer to dry it out. Once established, you can expect a firework display of flowers, day after day, for weeks. There are many varieties of semi evergreen or fully evergreen. You can divide these herbaceous perennials, in September/October and again in late winter/early spring. The more established the plant, the more you can divide the plant. These plants are resilient and generally trouble-free, from pests and disease. They require full sun and the sort of soil, that is not waterlogged. The wetter the ground, the more important it is to incorporate grit, when planting. Look into these, if you haven't already got any Hemerocallis in your garden.
