Seaside Plants

If you're lucky enough to live by the sea, then it is good to have a list of plants that will thrive, given the high salt content that is generally associated with living within half a mile of the sea.

There is a wonderful range of plants that will thrive in these conditions.  The sea has a wonderful effect of moderating the temperature and therefore removing the extremes of both hot and cold weather.

Shrubs;
Escallonia, there are many varieties from small to large and from white to red flower colours.  In the articles section on this website, there is one on Escallonia.

Pittosporum, again they come in many sizes and there is a separate article in the articles section on this website, to help you.

Grisellina, makes a fantastic hedge and thrives in these conditions.  It has a wonderful, gleaming green leaf, glossy and always gives the appearance of freshness.  There are variegated varieties of this, too.

Cistus, again there is an article on this colourful set of shrubs also known as The Sun Roses, in the articles section of this website.

Phormiums, these give a strikingly exotic feel to the garden and again there is a separate article, on this species in the articles section of this website.

Senecio, with its silvery grey foliage and yellow flowers,  is always a winner a sunny position.  The varieties such as Senecio monroi and Senecio Drysdale are especially attractive.

Hebes, these come in a wide range of sizes and colours,  and enjoy a sunny position.

Photinia fraseri Red Robin, is always a favourite focal point, with its white flowers and red new shoots in the spring and if you trim it in June you will get a lot of new red shoots in mid to late summer.

Elaeagnus are fantastically resilient shrubs in plain green and variegated varieties, I recommend you use the Elaeagnus pungens types for the shade.

There are many other shrubs that are suitable for the maritime air, don't hesitate to ask within the forums of this website, if you need any further suggestions or help.

Trees;
Quercus ilex or The Holm Oak always does well in these conditions, but bear in mind that these are big trees!

Arbutus or The Strawberry Tree, is a slower growing glossy evergreen with white flowers and red fruits.

Betula or Birch, many varieties of this tree do well in these conditions, and thrive on sandy ground.  There is wide range of sizes, suitable for most situations.

Sorbus, both Mountain Ash and Whitebeams are good in these conditions and again available in many sizes and the fruits vary widely in colour.

Conifers; Pinus or Pine relishes sea air and happily colonises clifftops.  There is a wide range in amount of growth from one variety to another from 1 foot in 10 years to a medium-sized tree in the same time.  Many of the shrubby Pines are fantastic with rockeries, as they are so slow.  Some even change colour from green in the summer to gold in the winter
