Add old compost from the compost heap, or leaf mould and mix it with some of the soil, that it is going to grow into. These develop quite a deep root, once established. If you dead head the flowers as they go over, then you will get more flowers, for longer. If you only have a sunny position, then the bottom part of the plant needs to be planted behind an existing shrub, in order to keep the lower section of the Japanese Anemone away from the sun. Some of the varieties, such as Anemone japonica Honorine Jobert is a single white flowering form, capable of 4 1/2 to 5 feet tall, when in flower. One of my favourite of all the varieties, is Anemone japonica Konigin von Charlotte which has a full, semi-double flower that is almost purple. This will reach a couple of feet in height. The plants, once established, are very drought resistant and the flowers look brilliant next to the Fatsia japonica, also known as The Castor Oil Plant. Anemone japonica Whirlwind is a great variety, flowering at about two and a half feet high, and this one is white and semi-double. The Anemone family is all related to the buttercup. There are also Anemone hupehensis varieties that are late flowering and there are certainly some good varieties to look at, such as Anemone hupehensis Hadspen Abundance which has very dark pink flowers. Anemone hupehensis Praecox has reddish, pink flowers will be a couple of feet tall, when in flower. There are many other varieties not mentioned here, but I hope that this article helps for ideas for colours at this time of year. Good Luck |
