Garden Design & Personal SpaceI am one of those people who love to hear stories behind objects. I will choose second hand books because of the inscriptions on the inside jacket cover. A second hand engagement ring from a tiny antique jewelry shop with a romantic story attached. The gardens which I create are always about stories. Stories from the people who currently use them and about those who used to...this is what I love about my job the deliciousness of being immersed within this story-world. We are not as comfortable telling stories as we once were, how lovely that a garden is a medium which can be used for this past time. Early childhood memories involve natural surroundings. Natural fragrances creep into your memory and lodge themselves in your mind to jump out at a distant point in the future. The scent of poplar trees reminds me of cleaning out rabbits and guinea pigs with leaf litter. Scent ensures a more permanent home for a memory. Soft landscaping within a garden design is one of the chapters of the story. Essential to its comprehension ; a necessary part of the whole. The colour and fragrance of the trees and plants providing the necessary remedy to ensure the success of the overall concept. I studied Art and Design specialising in Ceramics. I feel safe with tactile situations and enjoy creating objects with my hands, the familiarity reassuring me that this method of working will help a design be successful. When designing a garden it makes sense to create a three dimensional model to allow your imagination to explore the realistic possibilities of the design you suggest. It is a necessary step in the whole process of design. It anchors the concept in its purest form into your conscious and allows an important cognitive developmental step to be made from abstract to concrete. In reality the model building process provides the opportunity to make mistakes before you present to your client. The level of your understanding heightens and your presentation becomes better informed. Small areas with complicated details can be constructed making any problems easier to solve and explain. Modeling can assist in problem solving; the physicality of it allowing the mind to consider all of the options. I am fortunate to work in an area overlooking the Shropshire Hills, and I am also fortunate that the people whom I live amongst still enjoy listening to stories.
