Poisonous  Plants

Lots of plants are poisonous or capable of causing allergic reactions. Some will also pierce you with their sharp spines. Few actually do lasting harm but some should be treated with care and respect.

Many plants have poisonous bulbs or roots but as these are usually safely underground, they are less likely to poison anyone.

Example, If you are a parent with young children, it would be useful to have more information about which plants may be poisonous in your garden so that you can advise your children not to eat them or come into contact with them!
If you are a retired couple with grown up children, you may not be so concerned, until the grandchildren arrive!

1. Teach children not to eat anything straight from a plant or bush.
2. Fence off or remove known poisonous or dangerous plants

Just remember that there are many plants poisonous plants.  Some of which can cause skin irritations or even spikes on a plant, such as a Rose which could cause Tetanus.

I believe it is important to educate children from an early age about whats edible and whats not and what to touch and what not to touch! For example one good thing you could do is to create an edible area in the garden and state clearly that plants in this area are ok and not elsewhere.

The most common way for kids to eat the wrong plants is usually because of the way they look e.g. sweet looking fruits, brightly coloured berries, for example. When you buy a plant it is worth finding out the properties of the plant, before you purchase something that you like the look of and subsequently find that it is not suited to your situation.

When you move into a new property, then it is worth mapping your existing garden architecture and plants and it may well be worth investing in getting a gardening consultant in to help with this! Once you have the name of the plant you can investigate the properties of the plant to decide whether it is one you want or not!

There are roughly 75,000 varieties of plant available to the british gardener and many more world wide and therefore it wouldn’t be prudent to select particular plants for this article.

Don’t forget most of the poisonous plants for humans are not poisonous for wild life.

Hope this helps and good luck!
